In this course, the student will enjoy being inspired and challenged to read and write in a variety of genres. We will explore novels and literary elements, such as foreshadowing, flashbacks, cliffhangers and more. To deepen our comprehension skills, we will have book club discussions, create book trailers, share reviews, and more story projects. Using mentor texts, students will learn to read like writers and write like the authors they admire.
All students who apply for the Reading / Writing Extension Summer Course must be performing 'above grade level' for the subjects of reading and writing to be allowed to enroll in this summer class.
With a focus on the writing process and craft techniques, students can explore writing in different genres, such as odes, poetry, fantasy, folktales, literary essay, historical fiction and memoir. Using writing notebooks, we will keep “writerly lives” as we design our own writing notebooks. We will experiment with different kinds of jobs in our notebooks each day. Students can apply a variety of digital tools throughout the writing process from mind maps to cartoon storyboards to digital storytelling to book publishing. Furthermore, we will have fun investigating the use of punctuation and grammar through inquiry activities. If you love to read and write stories, join us for this summer school class is for you. If you think that you don’t like to read and write stories, we will change your mind!
